Using Causal Map to explore what drives community wellbeing in Pembrokeshire.

This exploratory project tested the use of Causal Map software to analyse qualitative wellbeing data gathered from interviews with 32 residents across two contrasting Pembrokeshire communities. Participants shared insights across five key asset types – individual, associations, institutions, place-based assets, and connections – revealing a rich web of factors influencing wellbeing. The analysis highlighted the positive impact of access to nature, community projects, social connections, and health services, with notable differences by age, gender, and location. While the software’s potential was clear, its early use was complex and labour-intensive. However, recent advances such as AI-assisted coding are improving its usability. The study offers valuable learning for future community-led wellbeing research, including the need for better training, more structured data collection, and further analysis of wellbeing drivers.
